A woman was allegedly undressed and sexually assaulted after falling asleep at a train station in Sydney's inner west this morning. Police said the year-old was asleep on a bench at Newtown train station when a man allegedly took off her clothes and began sexually assaulting her about 5. A commuter called police, who arrived a short time later and arrested a year-old man from Quakers Hill. He has been charged with sexual assault and possessing a prohibited drug and has been refused bail to appear before Newtown Local Court tomorrow. Police say she was not homeless but would not speculate on whether she had been to a Christmas party or was on her way to work. Two benches and two bins at the western end of the citybound platform were cordoned off by police tape and guarded by two police officers, plus station security, this morning.

A former Army captain has been jailed for the "disgusting, opportunist" sexual assault of a year-old girl while she was asleep on a train. A BTP spokesman said the guard saw Hunt change seats to be opposite the teen and then move towards her as she slept. The police spokesman said the year-old had boarded the train at Moorfields station in Liverpool and moved near the girl shorty after she got on at Seaforth and Litherland station. After seeing him molest the girl, the guard shouted at Hunt to stop and told him the police were being called. Speaking after the hearing, Det Con Dom Wilcox said it had been "a disgusting, opportunist attack on a young girl who was making her way home after a day out with friends". He said the victim was left "deeply traumatised", adding: "She should have been able to travel in safety without falling victim to Hunt's vile and unwanted behaviour. He added that the year-old's denial of the charge, which forced the girl to go through a trial, had been "cowardly".
